Initial Christmas idea's
I have used an On-line mind mapping tool https://bubbl.us/ to capture my initial idea's. It was a very useful and quick digital tool, enabling multiple idea bubbles to be added and changing colours with the click of a button.
I had a rough idea that I wanted to make a form of modern festive decoration or ornament however needed to explore what form it may take. As a starting point I have explored Christmas generally as my context to get a good overview of all the different area's in this festive period I could explore for my product and see anything sparks some inspiration. I am quite liking the idea of a 'digital' Christmas' as the module is systems and control.
Initial Product idea's
I have refined down my idea's to three potential outcomes that I would like to create all of which are prominent Christmas figure. I also decided that the electronic part of the design would be using LED'S. I thought it best to base the design on a well known Christmas figure to make the product instantly recognisable as a Christmas product, although I think it would be best if i did some primary research to get some genral feed back on the type of christmas product people would like.
Primary research (Questionnaire)
I felt it necessary to conduct my own primary research to gain an insight into for what kind of Christmas product people would like and generally what people think about Christmas and how they celebrate. I
am not making my product for any specific client but instead something that
could appeal across a wide demographic of people. I therefore sent my
questionnaire to a random selection of people of mixed ages, gender, and faith
to see if there was any commonalities among them, in order to make my product as
appealing and successful as possible. I do not want to go through the great
trouble of making a product which no one wants!... that would be
pointless.
A SUMMERY OF THE RESULT:
90% of the people surveyed celebrate Christmas
90% of people said Christmas is about getting together with family and eating a nice roast
70% think green best represents christmas
80% think the triangle best represent christmas over all other shapes
70% think the christmas tree is the ultimate symbol of christmas
50% of people said they do not have a centre piece for the xmas table and would like one
White, Red, Green, blue , and yellow are the top 5 chrstmas colours
70% of people described their christmas as 'Traditional'
50% of people have multicolours on their christmas tree
80% of people said they would like a flashing christmas tree centre piece for their table
60% of people said colour was the most important aspect of a christmas product.

As a result of my primary research (questionnaire) it has become clear that the Christmas tree is the most popular symbol of this holiday. It was also apparent from my questionnaire that people still enjoy a more traditional Christmas even in these modern times. Therefore my original intention of creating a completely modern and new representation of the Christmas would be inappropriate and think it would be better to find a 'middle ground'.
